Chapter 14

Alina

The doctor’s waiting room is as sterile as the look I get from the woman I sit across from. It doesn’t help that Jacy sneezes, earning me a long, irritated sneer.

I recognize the woman as a member of the Timber Cove wolves. She’s my age, pretty with her light-colored skin and hair. She has blue eyes. Obviously, like me, she’s made it past her twenty-sixth year and is a new mom. But seeing her makes me wonder why Jaxson didn’t mate within his pack as is custom. Why me?

Once I question Jaxson’s reasoning, it sticks to me like cigar smoke does to the worn upholstery of my father’s old truck, though he’s been gone for what seems like forever.

Jacy fusses, and I wipe her nose so she can breathe easier.

The woman presses her baby away from me as if I’m some sort of voodoo priestess. Maybe I am. I feel a lot of anger toward my old pack because not one of them reached out to me when I birthed the girls. But they would never have judged me, a mother, so harshly if I didn’t take up with Jaxson. It has me thinking that if Draven were here, he’d defend me from this rival pack member in a quick second. Would Jaxson? “They have allergies,” I attempt to explain, but it feels weak, even to me.

Her child turns its head toward the sound of my voice.

I notice right away her baby’s eyes are circled by puffy rings and his nose is draining clear fluid. I can’t tell if it’s leftover from a crying fit or if he’s sick with a cold. If he has allergies too.

“Allergies?” the woman huffs. “I know who you are. You haven’t been on the compound for more than a week and already, your babies have spread disease throughout our pack. There isn’t a child who isn’t charged with viral conjunctivitis. Even my sweet boy. After what you put Jaxson through, the best you could do for all of us is take your mongrels and leave.”

I suck in a quick breath, feeling as if I’ve been gut punched. Slowly, I twist in the seat, giving her my profile. I don’t let her see how her statement triggers me. Maybe we’d be better off back in Silver Bend, at least the property portion and my abandoned home, now that the pack has dispersed. If I was on speaking terms with Tavin, which I’m not, I’d ask him if I could return.

I just want to belong to and surround my girls with a pack that’s kind and empathetic, when I’m certain that doesn’t exist in Timber Cove.

Maybe it’s in everyone’s interest that I do leave once again...

No. Jaxson is your home now.

Instead of arguing and creating a scene with the woman who’s still sending me a shivery vibe, I shrink back, even if that’s not my personality. I have my girls. I won’t put them in danger by facing off with the shifter. “I’m sure the doctor will find a cure—”
